Here’s an extremely hard to come by vintage arch top guitar.
It’s hard to find much info on these old high quality Orpheum’s. If you’re
looking at this listing you likely know these are sought after quality pieces
and almost never show up here on eBay. They were not built by the Kay company
at this time, these were either built by the Orpheum banjo company or the Regal
This guitar has a great looking and unique shaded top and
fantastic sunburst back and sides.
The carved back and sides are solid maple with a nice medium
flame. The spruce top appears to be a laminate and it’s in great condition. No
crack, just minor pick wear and surface scratches from years of enjoyment.
The rosewood bridge, pick guard, bone nut and highly
collectable old Grover tuners are all original. The tailpiece is an exact
replacement and I have the original as well. Come to think of it, I bet the
tuners and case alone are worth what I’m asking!
The three piece neck plays great and where it needs to be. The
Brazilian rosewood fingerboard is also in terrific condition – just a bit of
wear in the first position. Same for the frets, just minor wear in the first
position. The fingerboard extension is raised up just a bit, which causes the
strings to buzz if the action is lowered too much. This could be addressed by
your local repair shop if need be.
There is one very old and stable repaired crack visible on the
treble side of the heel. It’s not at all a typical heel crack – this one is a
strange little slice of the heel that looks to have broken lose years ago. It
also appears that it could have had a neck set years ago too. There is slight separation
on the back of the heel, however the guitar has not moved at all in the 3 years
that I’ve owned it.
It plays great and sounds great too!
- Lower Width – 15.75”
- Upper width – 11.25”
- Waist – 9”
- Side depth – 3.5”
- Scale length – 25.25”
BTW, a similar guitar recently sold here for $1250.
The old hard shell plywood arched case still latches up and
the handle is fine. The rear hinge is disconnected, by I’m sure a luggage shop
could repair it.
Please let me know what other questions you might have.
Note: Buyer will pay actual shipping costs, not the price
quoted by eBay. This guitar ships from Winnipeg MB.
